  3. Check out resources, download posters and start promoting the event within your workplace

How do I start Bike to Work Week in my community?

The specific steps will be determined by the scope of your intended project.
  1. Search to see if other groups or individuals from your community are involved; combine resources
  2. Determine what you want to do in your first year - this may range from organizing a few workplace teams to holding one or several celebration station(s)
  3. Contact Bike to Work BC

  4. Request or attend a nearby workshop for your community
  5. Develop your plan of action (Events, Prizes, Promotion)

What are the benefits of implementing Bike to Work Week in this community?

Encouraging physical activity as a lifestyle

The average cycle commuter travels 20-30 minutes one-way on their commute, easily meeting Health Canada’s recommendation of one hour of physical activity each day. The most important influencing factors for people to Bike to Work are:
  • fun; and
  • health & wellness
Surprisingly, people are less convinced by these benefits:
  • saving money,
  • using time efficiently; and
  • helping to protect the environment.
For this reason, Bike to Work Week focuses on and accentuates the fun and health benefits of cycling.

Greater sense of community connectedness

People get excited about Bike to Work Week.  In the workplace it is a great opportunity for colleagues to develop camaraderie in encouraging one another to fit activity into their day.  The celebration stations provide a festive atmosphere that visibly demonstrate the fun of cycling to both cyclists and motorists.

Is there a cost?

Costs will vary from community to community and the amount of local and provincial sponsors and funders.Bike to Work BC can help you establish budgets and provide tips on attaining local sponsors. Depending upon overall funding seed funds may be available to help local communities-available after completing a simple application process.

What materials do Communities get for registering?

Communities are provided with the essential basic materials required to organize a successful Bike to Work Week event in their community, most efficiently.  These include:
  • camera-ready, customizable templates for posters,  t-shirts, forms and background materials for team leaders
  • use of a licensed, established set of logos
  • potential for seed funding
  • expertise from Bike to Work BC
  • Web pages specific to your community
  • real time registration and results for the community and in comparison with other areas
